Nobody told me that building a great leadership team would be the hardest part.

When I was helping grow a manufacturing company from a small Midwest operation into a multi-location business with reach across North America, I thought the hard work was in the product. The logistics. The hiring. The facilities.

It took years to understand that the real work happened in the room with the leadership team. Near daily, I struggled with the sometimes uncomfortable work of getting a group of capable, strong-willed people to stop pulling in different directions and start rowing together.

You’ll never see that in a leadership job description. And getting that type of alignment doesn't happen on its own.

### **Everyone's Rowing Hard… in Different Directions**

When I first walk into a session room with a leadership team, I usually see a roomful of hard-working, dedicated people. Nobody is coasting. They’re exerting real effort.

But without alignment, their efforts and only taking them in circles.

When roles are unclear, good people naturally try to fill the gaps. You end up with three people rowing toward the same problem, sometimes duplicating or cancelling out each other’s efforts.

Meanwhile, with everyone focused on this one problem, something else drifts. Then it’s off to the races in another direction, usually before the first problem is truly addressed.

Fuzzy accountability leads to fuzzy outcomes. Everyone has an opinion but nobody owns the end result. When the vision isn't shared clearly, each leader quietly navigates toward their own version of "the goal."

That's not a people problem. It's a structure problem.

And structure problems require you to roll up your sleeves and do the actual work of building something different.

### **What "Rowing Together" Actually Requires**

Getting aligned won’t happen during one retreat or by slapping new values on a poster on company walls. It requires three things that don't happen without deliberate effort:

- #### **Clarity on Where You're Going**

Owners must create a share their specific vision for what they’re building, what it looks like in three years, and what their top priorities are for the next 90 days. Every leader should be able to answer those questions the same way.

- #### **Clarity on Who Owns What**

Roles and responsibilities belong to one person in one seat. The moment two people think they own the same thing, accountability disappears. Every action should have one clear owner and a clear deadline for completing it. No confusion after the meeting.

- #### **Discipline to Have the Hard Conversation in the Room**

The hard things must be said in the room with the people who need to hear it. It shouldn’t become gossip in the parking lot after the meeting. A united front doesn't mean everyone agrees, it means everyone commits and walks out together.

### **The Work Doesn't Stop**

Keep those sleeves rolled up.

Your team won’t just arrive at Destination Alignment. This is an ongoing practice.

The best leadership teams I've worked with didn't get true alignment from one great offsite. They got there by showing up week after week in structured meetings, using a shared language and doing the work even when it was inconvenient.

That consistency separates a cohesive leadership team from a group of individual leaders.

It's not complicated. But it’s also not easy. Getting true alignment takes time and work, but it’s the most valuable work you'll do.
